The newly released Malayalam-language action film Khalifa, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, has generated intense discussion across South Indian cinema circles following its theatrical rollout. Directed around a high-stakes gold-smuggling narrative set across international trade hubs, the film features stylistic action sequences and an expansive supporting ensemble. However, critical reviews have proven divided; while audiences praised the lead actor's screen presence and production value, several film critics noted structural issues regarding narrative pacing and emotional depth. Despite mixed reactions, early box-office footfalls remain steady across key regional centers. Solid Box Office Start Amid Polarized Critical Reaction The highly anticipated Malayalam action thriller Khalifa, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, opened in theaters nationwide on August 20, 2026, delivering a steady commercial start while drawing a mixed response from film critics. Directed by Vysakh, the big-budget commercial entertainer arrived in over 1,900 screens ahead of the Onam festival period, collecting an estimated ₹4.90 crore net (₹5.68 crore gross) across India on its opening day. Home territory Kerala served as the chief financial driver, contributing ₹4.85 crore to the overall day-one gross, with late evening and night shows registering strong theater occupancy. While mass audiences praised the slick production values, stylish technical treatment, and high-octane action sequences, critical reviews remained divided regarding the film's structural pacing, complex political narrative, and second-half plot execution. Narrative Scale, Cameos, and Technical Execution Written by Jinu V. Abraham, Khalifa centers on the journey of Mambaraykkal Aamir Ali (played by Prithviraj), a textile entrepreneur who gets drawn into a global contraband and smuggling syndicate. The narrative weaves family history with underground power dynamics, featuring an extended cast that includes Neil Nitin Mukesh alongside a heavily discussed special appearance by veteran actor Mohanlal as Mambaraykkal Ahmad Ali. Technical aspects—specifically Jomon T. John's cinematography and Chaman Chacko's editing—received widespread acclaim for elevating the visual scale. However, several film reviewers noted that the second half struggles under the weight of excessive plot twists, family rivalries, and crowded character arcs, while underutilizing female supporting roles. Franchise Expansion and Weekend Trajectory Despite divided critical takes, the filmmakers capitalized on the initial theatrical momentum by officially announcing a planned sequel titled Khalifa 2 - The Legacy on the evening of the film's release. The second installment is expected to place a larger narrative emphasis on Mohanlal's character and delve deeper into the origins of the Mambaraykkal empire. Trade analysts project that sustained night-show occupancy and holiday turnout over the extended Onam weekend will dictate the film's ultimate box office legs. As Khalifa competes with concurrent festival releases in the regional marketplace, its initial box office opening demonstrates the continued commercial pull of star-driven Malayalam action cinema.
