Rescue efforts remain underway following a catastrophic artisanal gold mine collapse in the Central African Republic. Officials confirmed that at least 100 miners lost their lives, with dozens more feared trapped beneath heavy debris. Emergency responders are facing severe technical difficulties due to remote location logistics and unstable soil conditions, highlighting persistent safety and regulatory challenges surrounding unregulated mining operations in the region. Tragedy Strikes Unregulated Artisanal Gold Site In a devastating mining disaster, search and rescue teams continue working through heavy earth following a catastrophic landslide at an unregulated artisanal gold mine in the western region of the Central African Republic. The disaster occurred at the sprawling Zamboye open-pit mining site, situated in the Abba region of Nana-Mambere prefecture near the Cameroonian border. Local officials and eye-witness accounts report that several underground tunnels caved in simultaneously under heavy structural pressure, burying dozens of miners working inside the pit. Local authorities indicate that the death toll has passed 49 confirmed victims, while local mining associations fear the total casualty count could exceed 100 as rescue workers dig through tons of collapsed mud and debris. Bilateral Emergency Response and Medical Coordination Emergency crews, local volunteers, and judicial authorities from the nearby town of Baboua mobilized immediately to clear heavy earth and search for workers trapped in deep shafts. Because the Zamboye mining hub attracts cross-border migrant labor, confirmed casualties include citizens from the Central African Republic, Cameroon, and Chad. Regional authorities in neighboring Cameroon have established emergency medical channels along the border to receive injured survivors brought out of the pit. The Baboua public prosecutor’s office has formally opened a judicial inquiry into the disaster to investigate site management practices, while government ministers have ordered the immediate closure of the Zamboye site to prevent secondary collapses during ongoing recovery efforts. Persistent Regulatory and Safety Challenges The tragedy renews intense international scrutiny surrounding the widespread lack of safety oversight, structural reinforcement, and protective gear across Africa's informal mining sector. Artisanal gold extraction serves as a primary source of livelihood for thousands of rural youth across mineral-rich regions, yet many sites operate entirely outside formal government regulation and lack basic geological engineering safeguards. Civil society groups and regional leaders have repeatedly warned that unmonitored tunneling, paired with seasonal rains, creates extreme structural vulnerabilities at open-pit mines. As search operations proceed under challenging field conditions, human rights advocates and policy experts urge Central African authorities to enforce stricter safety regulations and dismantle illicit mineral supply chains to prevent further fatal mining accidents.
