The Indian men's field hockey team secured a thrill-filled 5-3 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in their crucial Pool D match at the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in Amstelveen, the Netherlands. Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, who converted two early penalty corners, India established an early 3-0 lead before Pakistan fought back through field goals from Hannan Shahid and Sufyan Khan. Despite facing late pressure and playing with ten men following a late yellow card, India held off the surge to lock in second place in Pool D behind England. The decisive result officially eliminates Pakistan from the tournament while sending India through to the knockout rounds. Dominant Early Attack Sets Up Vital Victory The Indian men's hockey team secured a spot in the second round of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in a thrilling Pool D encounter in Amstelveen. Needing a strong result to guarantee progression following a prior defeat to group leaders England, India launched an aggressive high-press strategy from the opening whistle. Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring in the fifth minute by converting a powerful penalty corner into the bottom-right corner. Forward Abhishek doubled the lead in the 11th minute with a brilliant solo run down the left flank before beating the Pakistani goalkeeper. Harmanpreet struck again early in the second quarter to give India a comfortable 3-0 lead. The decisive win allowed India to finish second in Pool D behind England and eliminated four-time champions Pakistan from the tournament. Pakistan Fights Back in High-Scoring Encounter Despite facing an early three-goal deficit, Pakistan displayed remarkable resilience to stay competitive throughout the match. Hannan Shahid pulled a goal back for Pakistan in the 22nd minute with a swift field goal. Although Abhishek completed his brace just two minutes later to make it 4-1, Pakistan answered immediately through a Sufyan Khan penalty-corner strike to enter halftime at 4-2. India restored a three-goal cushion early in the third quarter after Sukhjeet Singh was fouled inside the circle, allowing vice-captain Hardik Singh to calmly convert a 34th-minute penalty stroke. Shahid added his second goal of the night early in the final quarter to bring Pakistan within two goals, but India held firm through a frantic final phase—despite playing down a man due to a late yellow card—to seal all three points. Tactical Lessons and the Path Ahead While the victory extends India's decade-long unbeaten streak against Pakistan in international hockey, captain Harmanpreet Singh noted that defensive lapses remain a key area for improvement heading into the business end of the tournament. Conceding eight total goals across three pool matches highlighted occasional structural vulnerabilities that tougher opponents could exploit in the knockout stages. Nevertheless, the performance reaffirmed India's offensive depth, driven by midfield control from Vivek Sagar Prasad and sharp circle entries by the forward line. Advancing into Round 2 alongside pool winners England, the Netherlands, and top contenders from other groups, India shifts focus toward refining its defensive coordination as the team chases a World Cup podium finish.
