India has officially unveiled the world’s first systematic guide dedicated to protecting grasslands and open natural ecosystems during the UNCCD COP17 summit in Ulaanbaatar. The handbook establishes a scientific blueprint for conserving non-forest biomes that store carbon, support fragile pastoral livelihoods, and harbor endangered biodiversity. Indian delegates emphasized that global environmental frameworks must move beyond targeted reforestation by actively recognizing non-forested natural landscapes as critical, climate-resilient ecological assets. A Landmark Release for Open Natural Ecosystems Marking a major milestone in global environmental governance, India officially launched its first-ever Guide to Grasslands and Other Open Natural Ecosystems (ONEs) of India at the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in partnership with the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the guide provides a comprehensive framework for recognizing and managing non-forest biomes. In a video message during the launch, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized that open landscapes like grasslands, scrublands, and ravines have historically been undervalued simply due to an absence of dense tree cover. However, modern ecological science reinforces traditional community knowledge that these open natural environments are vital for preserving biodiversity, securing pastoral livelihoods, and building climate resilience. Ecological Diversity and Socio-Economic Value The comprehensive publication documents the wide diversity of India's open natural ecosystems, spanning the Himalayan and Terai high-altitude meadows, the arid Thar Desert, Banni grasslands, Deccan savannas, rocky plateaus, and coastal dunes. These open habitats shelter several threatened species, including the Great Indian Bustard, Bengal florican, Indian wolf, and blackbuck, whose survival relies entirely on intact non-forest spaces. Beyond supporting wildlife, the guide features detailed sections on pastoralism, fire ecology, and soil carbon sequestration, explaining how open ecosystems regulate hydrological flows and sustain millions of livestock-dependent families. By incorporating community-managed landscapes like traditional Orans and Gauchars, the guide highlights the deep interconnection between land stewardship, indigenous knowledge, and sustainable rural economies. Strengthening Global Land Degradation Neutrality Goals The unveiling of the guide at COP17 gives India a prominent international platform to shape global policies on rangelands and land restoration. Discussions held alongside the launch focused on integrating open natural ecosystems into broader Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) frameworks, urging policymakers to avoid misclassifying healthy grasslands as wasteland suitable for afforestation. Experts at the summit noted that science-based management of these habitats will be essential for meeting international climate targets and preventing soil erosion in fragile drylands. As conservationists, research institutions, and government bodies adopt the guide, India's model offers a scalable blueprint for balancing biodiversity protection with community-led sustainable development across the Global South.
