Following auditing observations regarding drinking water quality at major railway hubs, the Ministry of Railways has initiated a massive infrastructure upgrade to install multi-stage "Tank to Tap" filtration systems across 20,000 stations and railway facilities. The national clean water mandate ensures continuous water testing, online filtration, and automated chlorination to eliminate microbial contamination. The infrastructure overhaul prioritizes passenger safety, sanitary standards, and reliable access to safe drinking water for millions of daily commuters using Indian Railways. Overhauling Drinking Water Infrastructure Across Stations In a swift intervention to guarantee passenger safety and overhaul station amenities, Indian Railways has ordered the installation of a comprehensive "Tank to Tap" water filtration system across approximately 20,000 locations nationwide. Following an extensive review meeting led by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Ministry issued immediate directives to upgrade drinking water purification and distribution systems. The initiative targets major passenger touchpoints, station platforms, and waiting areas, integrating specialized filtration units directly into existing water cooler infrastructure. Alongside installing high-grade purification hardware, the national transporter has ordered the systematic replacement of legacy overhead storage tanks that have degraded over time. By embedding multi-stage filtration directly before water hits station taps, the railway administration aims to prevent secondary contamination within internal piping networks. Addressing CAG Audit Findings on Water Quality The network-wide upgrade comes in direct response to critical observations raised by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in a performance audit evaluating station amenities. The national auditor's report revealed that water samples collected from several stations across multiple zones tested positive for total coliform and E. coli bacteria, pointing to potential sewage or biological contamination in storage systems. Furthermore, the CAG highlighted persistent gaps in routine testing schedules, citing shortfalls in measuring residual chlorine levels and conducting required chemical or bacteriological analysis. To permanently rectify these deficiencies, the Ministry's directive enforces strict compliance with regular water testing at both source supply lines and consumer outlet taps. Scheduled, mandatory cleaning cycles for storage tanks are now codified under zone-wise operational protocols to prevent bacterial build-up. Centralized Oversight and Long-Term Quality Standards To ensure complete compliance and eliminate operational lapses, drinking water quality management has been designated as a top-priority focus area monitored directly at the Railway Board level. The ministry is establishing a centralized data framework to track testing metrics, maintenance schedules, and water quality parameters across all divisions in real time. To foster public accountability, progress reports and verified water quality scores will be published periodically on official passenger portals. This water safety drive forms part of a broader campaign to resolve auditor observations regarding passenger infrastructure delays, non-functional facilities, and general station sanitation. Ultimately, standardizing "Tank to Tap" filtration across 20,000 sites restores passenger confidence in station amenities and establishes a dependable clean water benchmark for rail travelers.
